GenSIP is a group of companies which came together in 2006 to share expertise and knowledge about safe management of ageing power generating assets.
GenSIP was formed in response to emerging integrity issues in the UK’s fleet of ageing power plant, which had major personnel safety implications.
The GenSIP field of interest covers non-competitive common issues affecting personnel safety for UK generators. Members collaborate in a jointly-funded non-profit work programme to enable Good Practice guidance to be produced for key risks. GenSIP provides members with an interface to other industry bodies and regulators such as Energy UK and the UK Health and Safety Executive.
As plant continues to operate beyond its original design life, an increasing number of plant integrity issues arise. Different failure modes emerge, for example flow assisted corrosion. As a result of this failures can occur in previously low risk areas.
Initially the group concerned all eight coal generating companies operating in the United Kingdom. In time the GenSIP scope extended to cover a range of generating assets including hydro, biomass, gas turbines and alternative fuels such as Energy from Waste.
