INDUSTRIAL CHIMNEY PROJECTS

Zenith were awarded a contract to carry out extensive repairs to a 96m high steel chimney at a Cycle Gas Turbine station located on the south coast of England.

The refurbishment of the chimney included the removal and replacement of the external access platforms and ladders including the full circumferential platforms at the 50m and 95m level and then the installation of the previously removed access ladders and rest platforms from the 29m to the 95m levels.

Access was gained from suspended access cradles and a full circumferential suspended temporary works platform.

The full scope of works included:

  • Installation of all welded support plates for replacement ladders and rest platforms.
  • Removal of the 50m AWL and full circumferential access platform and instrumentation probes.
  • Removal of the 95m AWL and full circumferential access platform.
  • Reposition at the 95m of the AWL to the upper cathead.
  • Removal and replacement of all bolts from the chimney flange connections.
  • Chimney surface preparation and painting.
  • Installation of the 95m full circumferential access platform complete with a heat shield.
  • Installation of replacement AWL at the 95m platform level.
  • Installation of vertical access ladders and rest platforms from the 95m level to the 50m level.
  • Installation at the 50m level of a full circumferential access platform complete with a heat shield.
  • Installation of replacement AWL at the 50m platform level including instrumentation probes.
  • Installation of vertical access ladders from the 50m level to the 29m level.
  • Removal and replacement of 29m level access platform.
