Innovative Access Solution at Historic Tron Kirk

Zenith Innovative Scaffolding Design

The Zenith Group recently completed a stonework project at the historic Tron Kirk in Edinburgh. This project is a great example of our versatility as a multi-disciplined contractor. An existing client initially contacted us to carry out a specialist access statutory safety inspection. Our Property Conservation division conducted the inspection using traditional steeplejack and rope access techniques. During the inspection, we discovered potentially dangerous masonry between the tower and the spire, which we immediately reported to the client. Given the busy location of the Tron on the Royal Mile and North Bridge, public and transport safety was a priority.

The client knew Zenith’s in-house capabilities and asked us to design an innovative access solution using our in-house engineering and design team. Our engineers designed a specialist access scaffold that combined traditional scaffolding with steeplejack/rope access techniques. This solution greatly reduced the equipment, labour, and time required compared to traditional scaffold methods.

Following the access installation by Zenith’s steeplejack, scaffolding, and rope access teams, Zenith’s Property conservation team, including stonemasons and specialist leadworkers, carried out the urgent repairs. The Tron Kirk, built in the 17th century, is one of the iconic buildings on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and was placed on the Buildings at Risk Register in 2003.

Zenith Group is a multi-disciplined contractor providing inspection, engineering design, access installation, and executing all required trade repairs in-house.
