INNOVATIVE SLATE EDGE PROTECTION – ZENITH’S CONTINUOUS INNOVATION & EXCELLENCE THROUGH WORLD CLASS RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Zenith’s proactive Research and Development team recently developed an innovative bespoke access rope diverting device for protecting the slate egde roof, whist repairs are underway, at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Edinburgh Castle. Although many edge protection devices already exist, this project presented unique challenges that could not be addressed using any off-the-shelf solutions. The area of the proposed works included a significant 300mm unsupported slate overhang. With high-value slates that are both expensive and difficult to replace, preventing any damage to them was a top priority, alongside ensuring safe project execution.

Zenith’s in house Research and Development team adopted a hands-on approach, conducting extensive research, multiple iterations, and rigorous testing. All prototyping and testing was carried out at Zenith’s dedicated Research and Development facility in Midlothian. The concept development phase began with iterative sketching and idea generation. These early-stage concepts were reviewed collaboratively across the product development team, structural engineers, and senior rope access technicians. By integrating direct feedback from our experienced onsite operatives, we ensured that all proposed solutions were practical, field-appropriate, and aligned with user requirements.

Subsequent to concept validation, the product team transitioned to 3D modelling, where detailed components and assembly interactions were developed. Continuous collaboration with our engineers throughout this stage allowed for proactive identification of potential stress concentrations and load transfer inefficiencies. Design considerations were rigorously evaluated to meet the requirements for static load testing at 12kN, ensuring structural integrity and compliance with safety standards. rototyping was carried out at Zenith’s in-house Fabrication and Research and Development facility.
